What is a talebearer?

A talebearer in the Bible was someone who spread gossip or rumors. Has someone ever told you a secret? Has anyone ever spread gossip about you to others?

Gossip can hurt people and damage their reputations. Here is what the Bible tells us about being a talebearer.

Watch your mouth

I remember growing up if we back talked our Mother she would look at us and say “You better watch your mouth.” As adults we can get in trouble for what comes out of our mouth also. Someone cuts us off in traffic, someone makes us mad, someone smarts off to us first. The Bible tells us we have to guard our mouth.

Proverbs 21:23 – Whoso keepeth his mouth and his tongue keepeth his soul from troubles.

Ephesians 4:29 – Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.

Proverbs 15:1 – A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger.

James 3:2– For in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body.

Proverbs 12:18 – There is that speaketh like the piercings of a sword: but the tongue of the wise is health.

Psalms 141:3 – Set a watch, O LORD, before my mouth; keep the door of my lips.

Psalms 34:13 – Keep thy tongue from evil, and thy lips from speaking guile.

Soldier of the Lord’s

We are to be soldiers in the army of God’s. Paul tell us in,
2 Timothy 2:3 – Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ.
2 Timothy 2:4 – No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier.

We are to endure hardships that come our way in life and to please our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. God’s word tells us how to fight against those spiritual battles.

11 Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.

12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

For we brought nothing into this world

Some people when they become rich they want more and more.

We have to be careful to not be greedy it is after all material things.

  • He that loveth silver shall not be satisfied with silver; nor he that loveth abundance with increase: this is also vanity.Ecclesiastes 5:10

Respect your elders

I was raised to respect my parents and elders. To say “Yes Sir” and “Yes Ma’am”. I carried that with me through out life and when my Parents grew older and were home bound I took care of them. It breaks my heart to see so many young people disobeying their parents, grandparents or the elderly in general. It makes me mad to see on the news where someone has shoved an elderly person down, beaten them up or worse killed them. As I studied 1 Timothy this morning and this verse,

2 The elder women as mothers; the younger as sisters, with all purity.

It stood out to me in respecting those that are older.

2 Kings 2:23-24 King James Version

24 And he turned back, and looked on them, and cursed them in the name of the Lord. And there came forth two she bears out of the wood, and tare forty and two children of them.

The Bible tells us how we are to honor our elderly.


Proverbs 19:20 – Hear counsel, and receive instruction, that thou mayest be wise in thy latter end.

Hebrews 13:17 – Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account, that they may do it with joy, and not with grief: for that is unprofitable for you.

1 Peter 5:5 – Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble.

Ephesians 6:1 – Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right.

Leviticus 19:32 – Thou shalt rise up before the hoary head, and honour the face of the old man, and fear thy God: I am the LORD.

Friends like Job’s

Job 1:1-22 we have Job who was blameless and righteous before God. Job was rich and had ten children, seven sons and three daughters. God allowed Satan to put Job through a test except not to take Job’s life. So Job lost everything his livestock, then all of his children were killed and then Job developed a horrible and painful skin condition. But in all this he never cursed or blamed God.

Here is the positive that Job’s friends did in the beginning.

11 Now when Job’s three friends heard of all this evil that was come upon him, they came every one from his own place; Eliphaz the Temanite, and Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite: for they had made an appointment together to come to mourn with him and to comfort him.

12 And when they lifted up their eyes afar off, and knew him not, they lifted up their voice, and wept; and they rent every one his mantle, and sprinkled dust upon their heads toward heaven.

13 So they sat down with him upon the ground seven days and seven nights, and none spake a word unto him: for they saw that his grief was very great

Sometimes we may not know the words to comfort someone who is going through a death, health issues or whatever pain in their lives we can just be there to comfort them. Job’s friends heard about what happened to him they immediately came to see him, they wept and just sat with him.

But soon it goes down hill from here they want to each give long speeches to Job accusing him of sinning that caused all of his loss. Job gets mad at them and God even is mad at his friends. But later Job prays for his friends and God gave back to Job twice as much as he had before.

Job 16:2

“I have heard many such things: miserable comforters are ye all.”

But God used all his sufferings for a test. We can use this as a lesson to be a friend that doesn’t point fingers or blame the person that has lost something but give them encouragement, comfort and love as Jesus would do.

Job 19:19

All my inward friends abhorred me: and they whom I loved are turned against me. 

Job 19:21

Have pity upon me, have pity upon me, O ye my friends; for the hand of God hath touched me. 

Job 32:3

Also against his three friends was his wrath kindled, because they had found no answer, and [yet] had condemned Job.

Job 42:7

And it was [so], that after the LORD had spoken these words unto Job, the LORD said to Eliphaz the Temanite, My wrath is kindled against thee, and against thy two friends: for ye have not spoken of me [the thing that is] right, as my servant Job [hath]. 

Job 42:10

And the LORD turned the captivity of Job, when he prayed for his friends: also the LORD gave Job twice as much as he had before.

You are never alone

I used to have separation anxiety as a child and it followed me at times as an adult. I remember in elementary school being so shy and introverted I sat alone at lunch many times. I got lost as a child in a store and a lady found me crying and found my Mother. I went with my cousins and an Aunt to eat when I was a teenager and my Aunt played a joke on my cousin and I and left us for like thirty minutes! I was in such panic by the time she came back. We can know with Jesus we are never alone. When my Mother who was in the hospital alone but was going to be discharged that day suddenly died all alone with none of us around because of the Covid regulations at the time it hurt me so bad that we weren’t able to be with her! But then I remembered she wasn’t alone she had Jesus to welcome her to her heavenly home!

Quit murmuring and be a light.

Have you ever been told to do something but you really didn’t want to do it so you went away grumbling and murmuring about it? I have been so guilty of this at times in my life.

We need to be a light in this world and when we feel that need to murmur or dispute we need to turn to God’s word and remember what Christ did for us.

Hiding from God

Have you ever played hide and seek as a child? Growing up we would play it at night time. While one closed their eyes and counted we would run and hide. On one particular night as I ran I didn’t see a deep hole in the ground and my foot went in it and I fell down in pain. I of course was found first from hollering in pain. We try to hide from God sometimes but he knows everything even the things that you try to cover up.

I will not leave you

It is amazing that no matter what we are facing in life, no matter what hardships Jesus is there right with us. He will never leave us even at times when we may have left him. He loves us so much.
