Danger of the Occult

When I was younger and not a Christian I would look at my horoscopes and even went once to a family member who was taught by traveling Gypsies to read fortunes. I was not raised in church and didn’t know all this was wrong. When I became a Christian I knew all that was evil. I still hear people say they went to a psychic to find out their future or they looked at a horoscope to start their day. The bible warns us that the Occult is evil. What you think is harmless fun could lead you down a road of sin. Break free from it.

Acts 13:8-11 KJV

But Elymas the sorcerer (for so is his name by interpretation) withstood them, seeking to turn away the deputy from the faith.

Then Saul, (who also is called Paul,) filled with the Holy Ghost, set his eyes on him.

10 And said, O full of all subtilty and all mischief, thou child of the devil, thou enemy of all righteousness, wilt thou not cease to pervert the right ways of the Lord?

11 And now, behold, the hand of the Lord is upon thee, and thou shalt be blind, not seeing the sun for a season. And immediately there fell on him a mist and a darkness; and he went about seeking some to lead him by the hand

Acts 19:11-16 KJV

11 And God wrought special miracles by the hands of Paul:

12 So that from his body were brought unto the sick handkerchiefs or aprons, and the diseases departed from them, and the evil spirits went out of them.

13 Then certain of the vagabond Jews, exorcists, took upon them to call over them which had evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, We adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preacheth.

14 And there were seven sons of one Sceva, a Jew, and chief of the priests, which did so.

15 And the evil spirit answered and said, Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are ye?

16 And the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, and overcame them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded

What is that to thee?

John 21:20-22 KJV

20 Then Peter, turning about, seeth the disciple whom Jesus loved following; which also leaned on his breast at supper, and said, Lord, which is he that betrayeth thee?

21 Peter seeing him saith to Jesus, Lord, and what shall this man do?

22 Jesus saith unto him, If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee? follow thou me.

We are sometimes like Peter when we get our eyes off of Jesus and want to worry what others are doing. Jesus tells Peter, “what is that to thee? Follow thou me.” We need to take that advice every day and quit worrying what others think, do or say but to keep our eyes on Jesus.

1 Timothy 5:13 – And withal they learn to be idle, wandering about from house to house; and not only idle, but tattlers also and busybodies, speaking things which they ought not.

1 Thessalonians 4:11 – And that ye study to be quiet, and to do your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you;

2 Thessalonians 3:11 – For we hear that there are some which walk among you disorderly, working not at all, but are busybodies.

1 Peter 4:15 – But let none of you suffer as a murderer, or as a thief, or as an evildoer, or as a busybody in other men’s matters.

Proverbs 20:3 – It is an honour for a man to cease from strife: but every fool will be meddling.

Leviticus 19:16 – Thou shalt not go up and down as a talebearer among thy people: neither shalt thou stand against the blood of thy neighbour: I am the LORD.

2 Thessalonians 3:6 – Now we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye withdraw yourselves from every brother that walketh disorderly, and not after the tradition which he received of us.

Proverbs 24:2 – For their heart studieth destruction, and their lips talk of mischief.

2 Thessalonians 3:12 – Now them that are such we command and exhort by our Lord Jesus Christ, that with quietness they work, and eat their own bread.

Jesus loved us this much

Do we really know how much Jesus suffered for our sins? He loved us so much he died for us! He was up under so much stress when he prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane his sweat was as drops of blood which the medical description is called Hematidrosis. He knew the suffering he was about to endure. Then when he was arrested he was beat, spit upon and even the hairs of his beard plucked. Pilate then had him flogged with forty lashes. The Romans whip was several whips together which had pieces of lead, metal, and bone at the ends sharpened to tear in to the flesh. It was such a horrible form of torture that it was illegal for them to do it to Romans only to be done to enemies. Each time that whip came down it would tear chunks of flesh leaving vessels and organs exposed. Imagine getting forty whips of that! Jesus was in severe pain, bleeding and his body was probably going in to shock but they beat him again and even put a crown of thorns upon his head. These were thick thorns. Jesus was so weak he wasn’t able to carry his cross by this time. The Romans cross was heavy weighing a lot and made of rough wood. Then they drove the 5-7 inch spikes in his hands and feet. Then as they lifted him up on that cross his arms would be stretched to the point they would be dislocated. Every agonizing breath he would of had to use his feet to push up to get a breath and to exhale. That would of made the pain from the spikes digging deeper in his skin worse. We know not a bone was broken on his body and his body was unrecognizable. He did all this for everyone and every sin that we ever did. All he asks from us is to accept him as their Saviour and to believe!

Isaiah 50:6

“I gave my back to the smiters, and my cheeks to them that plucked off the hair: I hid not my face from shame and spitting.

1 Peter 3:18 – For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:

1 John 3:16 – Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.

Isaiah 53:5 – But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.

Isaiah 53:1 – Who hath believed our report? and to whom is the arm of the LORD revealed?

John 11:25 – Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:

1 John 2:2 – And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.

John 5:24 – Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.

Psalms 22:14– I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint: my heart is like wax; it is melted in the midst of my bowels.

Colossians 2:14 – Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;

John 8:12 – Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.

Disagreeing Christians

The disagreement of Paul and Barnabas in the bible over John Mark. We know from the bible that John Mark was a cousin of Barnabas and had went with them on their first mission trip but left in the middle of it. Let’s take a look at the account.

Acts 15:36-41 KJV

36 And some days after Paul said unto Barnabas, Let us go again and visit our brethren in every city where we have preached the word of the Lord, and see how they do.

37 And Barnabas determined to take with them John, whose surname was Mark.

38 But Paul thought not good to take him with them, who departed from them from Pamphylia, and went not with them to the work.

39 And the contention was so sharp between them, that they departed asunder one from the other: and so Barnabas took Mark, and sailed unto Cyprus;

40 And Paul chose Silas, and departed, being recommended by the brethren unto the grace of God.

41 And he went through Syria and Cilicia, confirming the churches.

Barnabas wanted to give Mark a second chance but Paul disagreed and they separated. Paul taking Silas with him and Barnabas taking Mark. God used both of them to reach even more people. Their disagreement didn’t last and they both had respect for each other. Paul later while in prision told Timothy to bring Mark with him.

2 Timothy 4:11

“Only Luke is with me. Take Mark, and bring him with thee: for he is profitable to me for the ministry.

Christians will disagree with each other from time to time but don’t take it to heart. We all have the same goal and that is doing God’s will.

Matthew 18:15– Moreover if thy brother shall trespass against thee, go and tell him his fault between thee and him alone: if he shall hear thee, thou hast gained thy brother.

Romans 14:1 – Him that is weak in the faith receive ye, but not to doubtful disputations.

James 4:11 – Speak not evil one of another, brethren. He that speaketh evil of his brother, and judgeth his brother, speaketh evil of the law, and judgeth the law: but if thou judge the law, thou art not a doer of the law, but a judge.

1 Corinthians 13:1– Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.

John 7:24 – Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment.

1 Corinthians 6:1 – Dare any of you, having a matter against another, go to law before the unjust, and not before the saints?

Philippians 3:15 – Let us therefore, as many as be perfect, be thus minded: and if in any thing ye be otherwise minded, God shall reveal even this unto you

The Holy Spirit

As believers we have a helper that resides in us. It’s the Holy Spirit. When you have done something wrong did you have that feeling of regret? The Holy Spirit helps us in what we need to pray and helps us in every aspect of life.

The Holy Spirit guides us in truth, he helps believers understand the things of God, he leads people on where to go in life, he sets people apart for certain ministeries, he stops the plans of believers if it isnt right for us, and he guides us in difficult situations. We see this in all of the bible when the Holy spirit spoke to people.

The bible also tells us that Satan puts a spiritual blindfold on unbelievers until they believe and that blindfold is removed. Then as a Christian the holy spirit will guide them.

  • Now when all the people were baptized, it came to pass, that Jesus also being baptized, and praying, the heaven was opened, And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased.Luke 3:21-22
  • For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.2 Peter 1:21
  • And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them.Ezekiel 36:27
  • But when they shall lead you, and deliver you up, take no thought beforehand what ye shall speak, neither do ye premeditate: but whatsoever shall be given you in that hour, that speak ye: for it is not ye that speak, but the Holy Ghost.Mark 13:11

  • But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me.John 15:26
  • And we are his witnesses of these things; and so is also the Holy Ghost, whom God hath given to them that obey him.Acts 5:32

  • And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.Ephesians 4:30
  • If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?Luke 11:13

  • And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.Acts 2:3-4
  • And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever.John 14:16

John 16:13 – Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.

The Raising of Lazarus

As I studied about Lazarus today in the bible I pictured in my mind what it would of been like seeing Lazarus coming up out of that grave. In Hebrew the name Lazarus means ” God has helped”. We know from the bible that Jesus was very close to Lazarus and his sisters Mary and Martha. The sisters send word to Jesus who was out of town preaching to let him know he was sick. But Jesus delayed going because he was going to wait till Lazarus died so he could perform the amazing miracle of raising him from the dead. Four days later Jesus comes and Martha meets him first.

There is so many lessons in this that God is never late he is right on time. We just have to believe and have faith.

John 11:1-44 KJV

11 Now a certain man was sick, named Lazarus, of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha.

(It was that Mary which anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.)

Therefore his sisters sent unto him, saying, Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick.

When Jesus heard that, he said, This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby.

Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus.

When he had heard therefore that he was sick, he abode two days still in the same place where he was.

Then after that saith he to his disciples, Let us go into Judaea again.

His disciples say unto him, Master, the Jews of late sought to stone thee; and goest thou thither again?

Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any man walk in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world.

10 But if a man walk in the night, he stumbleth, because there is no light in him.

11 These things said he: and after that he saith unto them, Our friend Lazarus sleepeth; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep.

12 Then said his disciples, Lord, if he sleep, he shall do well.

13 Howbeit Jesus spake of his death: but they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep.

14 Then said Jesus unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead.

15 And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, to the intent ye may believe; nevertheless let us go unto him.

16 Then said Thomas, which is called Didymus, unto his fellowdisciples, Let us also go, that we may die with him.

17 Then when Jesus came, he found that he had lain in the grave four days already.

18 Now Bethany was nigh unto Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off:

19 And many of the Jews came to Martha and Mary, to comfort them concerning their brother.

20 Then Martha, as soon as she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met him: but Mary sat still in the house.

21 Then said Martha unto Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.

22 But I know, that even now, whatsoever thou wilt ask of God, God will give it thee.

23 Jesus saith unto her, Thy brother shall rise again.

24 Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day.

25 Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:

26 And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?

27 She saith unto him, Yea, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world.

28 And when she had so said, she went her way, and called Mary her sister secretly, saying, The Master is come, and calleth for thee.

29 As soon as she heard that, she arose quickly, and came unto him.

30 Now Jesus was not yet come into the town, but was in that place where Martha met him.

31 The Jews then which were with her in the house, and comforted her, when they saw Mary, that she rose up hastily and went out, followed her, saying, She goeth unto the grave to weep there.

32 Then when Mary was come where Jesus was, and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying unto him, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.

33 When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews also weeping which came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled.

34 And said, Where have ye laid him? They said unto him, Lord, come and see.

35 Jesus wept.

36 Then said the Jews, Behold how he loved him!

37 And some of them said, Could not this man, which opened the eyes of the blind, have caused that even this man should not have died?

38 Jesus therefore again groaning in himself cometh to the grave. It was a cave, and a stone lay upon it.

39 Jesus said, Take ye away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith unto him, Lord, by this time he stinketh: for he hath been dead four days.

40 Jesus saith unto her, Said I not unto thee, that, if thou wouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God?

41 Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me.

42 And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the people which stand by I said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me.

43 And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth.

44 And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go

Lazarus came out of the tomb in his burial clothes! Can you imagine what Lazarus had seen in Heaven those days before Jesus raised him? Jesus later died and was ressurected so that all who believe upon him will have eternal life!!

Daniel 12:2 – And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt.

Romans 8:11 – But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.

Second Chance

Do you think you have sinned so badly that God cannot forgive you? Let’s look at some great people in the bible that sinned just like we do but God gave them a second chance and used them mightily to glorify him.

1. David sinned by committing adultery, deception and murder. He repented and God used him in a mighty way.

2. Apostle Paul who was formerly Saul of Tarsus. He harassed and persecuted Christians in the early church until on the road to Damascus he had an encounter with Jesus. He repented and God used him for his glory.

3. Peter who was a Disciple of Jesus he denied Jesus three times and failed many times just as we do but he was used greatly.

4. The woman who was caught in adultery in the very act and was about to be stoned until Jesus told them he who is without sin cast the first stone. They dropped their stones and left and Jesus told her to go and sin no more.

5. Rahab the Prostitute was used by God by showing her great faith in helping God’s people.

6. Moses killed a man but God still used him.

God wants to forgive you and have a personal relationship with him. He can give you that second chance where others wouldn’t. He wants to use you for his glory!

Bread of Life

Reading today in John Chapter six the miracle of the feeding of five thousand with two fishes and five loaves of barley bread.

John 6:1-12 KJV

6 After these things Jesus went over the sea of Galilee, which is the sea of Tiberias.

And a great multitude followed him, because they saw his miracles which he did on them that were diseased.

And Jesus went up into a mountain, and there he sat with his disciples.

And the passover, a feast of the Jews, was nigh.

When Jesus then lifted up his eyes, and saw a great company come unto him, he saith unto Philip, Whence shall we buy bread, that these may eat?

And this he said to prove him: for he himself knew what he would do.

Philip answered him, Two hundred pennyworth of bread is not sufficient for them, that every one of them may take a little.

One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, saith unto him,

There is a lad here, which hath five barley loaves, and two small fishes: but what are they among so many?

10 And Jesus said, Make the men sit down. Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, in number about five thousand.

11 And Jesus took the loaves; and when he had given thanks, he distributed to the disciples, and the disciples to them that were set down; and likewise of the fishes as much as they would.

12 When they were filled, he said unto his disciples, Gather up the fragments that remain, that nothing be lost.

What an amazing miracle. But what follows this miracle is what was laid on my heart. Jesus the Bread of Life!

  • But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.Matthew 4:4
  • And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me.Luke 22:19

24 When the people therefore saw that Jesus was not there, neither his disciples, they also took shipping, and came to Capernaum, seeking for Jesus.

25 And when they had found him on the other side of the sea, they said unto him, Rabbi, when camest thou hither?

26 Jesus answered them and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Ye seek me, not because ye saw the miracles, but because ye did eat of the loaves, and were filled.

27 Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him hath God the Father sealed.

28 Then said they unto him, What shall we do, that we might work the works of God?

29 Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.

30 They said therefore unto him, What sign shewest thou then, that we may see, and believe thee? what dost thou work?

31 Our fathers did eat manna in the desert; as it is written, He gave them bread from heaven to eat.

32 Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Moses gave you not that bread from heaven; but my Father giveth you the true bread from heaven.

33 For the bread of God is he which cometh down from heaven, and giveth life unto the world.

34 Then said they unto him, Lord, evermore give us this bread.

35 And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.

36 But I said unto you, That ye also have seen me, and believe not.

37 All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.

38 For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me.

39 And this is the Father’s will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day.

40 And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.

41 The Jews then murmured at him, because he said, I am the bread which came down from heaven.

42 And they said, Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? how is it then that he saith, I came down from heaven?

43 Jesus therefore answered and said unto them, Murmur not among yourselves.

44 No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day.

45 It is written in the prophets, And they shall be all taught of God. Every man therefore that hath heard, and hath learned of the Father, cometh unto me.

46 Not that any man hath seen the Father, save he which is of God, he hath seen the Father.

47 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life.

48 I am that bread of life.

49 Your fathers did eat manna in the wilderness, and are dead.

50 This is the bread which cometh down from heaven, that a man may eat thereof, and not die.

51 I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.

52 The Jews therefore strove among themselves, saying, How can this man give us his flesh to eat?

53 Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you.

54 Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day.

55 For my flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed.

56 He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, dwelleth in me, and I in him.

57 As the living Father hath sent me, and I live by the Father: so he that eateth me, even he shall live by me.

58 This is that bread which came down from heaven: not as your fathers did eat manna, and are dead: he that eateth of this bread shall live for ever.

59 These things said he in the synagogue, as he taught in Capernaum.

60 Many therefore of his disciples, when they had heard this, said, This is an hard saying; who can hear it?

61 When Jesus knew in himself that his disciples murmured at it, he said unto them, Doth this offend you?

62 What and if ye shall see the Son of man ascend up where he was before?

63 It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.

64 But there are some of you that believe not. For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were that believed not, and who should betray him.

65 And he said, Therefore said I unto you, that no man can come unto me, except it were given unto him of my Father.

66 From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him.

67 Then said Jesus unto the twelve, Will ye also go away?

68 Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life.

69 And we believe and are sure that thou art that Christ, the Son of the living God.
